Sail a Dahabiya Nile Cruise between Luxor and Aswan, tour Karnak Temple and the Valley of the Kings with a private Egyptologist, then compare our Luxury Nile Cruises or full Nile River Cruises lineup, or tailor your own journey with EgyVacations.
The engine falls silent. The sails catch the wind. And Egypt begins to drift past your deck chair exactly as it did for pharaohs, 19th-century explorers, and the wealthy families who once commissioned these golden boats as private yachts. This is the magic of a Dahabiya — Egypt’s most intimate, most authentic way to sail the river that built one of history’s greatest civilizations.
Unlike the towering, engine-powered ships that dominate the Nile today, a Dahabiya is a traditional twin-masted sailboat carrying only 8 to 20 guests across a handful of cabins. There are no crowded buffet lines, no rigid nightly schedules, and no queue of tour buses at the temple gate.…
Instead, you wake to mist rising off the water instead of a marina, moor at quiet riverside villages larger cruises can’t reach, and explore ancient wonders almost entirely on your own terms, with the crew and your guide adjusting the pace to suit you.
Your journey unfolds slowly and deliberately, guided as much by the wind as by the schedule, while quieter stops like Edfu, Kom Ombo, and Gebel el-Silsila reveal a side of Egypt most travelers never see. Evenings bring gourmet meals prepared onboard, sundowners on the open deck, and a silence broken only by the gentle rhythm of the river itself — a world away from the noise of a mega-ship.
Whether you’re planning a romantic honeymoon tour, a milestone family tour for celebration, or simply the trip of a lifetime, a Dahabiya offers something increasingly rare in modern travel: space, stillness, and a genuine connection to the Nile and its people — a five-star Egyptian sailing adventure you’ll remember for years.

EXCELLENT Based on 29 reviews Posted on Tripadvisor JohnVerified Super agent Don't hesitate to book with them actually they are doing the best all the time super super superPosted on Tripadvisor ThomasVerified Great service The best service with the best agentPosted on Tripadvisor raniaVerified Had a great time in Egypt! I had an amazing experience with Egy Vacations from start to finish. The planning process was smooth, and Eman, who helped us plan our itinerary, was incredibly accommodating. She adjusted the itinerary to include places we really wanted to visit and made everything work within our student budget. In Cairo, we only had time for a one-day tour, but it was still very well organized and made the most of the limited time we had. Our guide, Toka, was very knowledgeable and explained Egyptian history in a clear and engaging way. Her storytelling made the dynasties easy to understand, even for first-time visitors. She was friendly and fun to be around, and she made the time spent driving between sites enjoyable as well. One small thing to note is that lunch was supposed to be included in the Cairo tour, but we didn’t end up having lunch, likely due to our very packed itinerary. This was understandable given the time constraints, but it would have been helpful to have a heads-up since the tour was booked with lunch included. During our cruise and our time in Luxor and Aswan, Amir was our guide. These cities are absolutely beautiful, and Amir did a great job explaining the history without overwhelming us, especially since we had no background in Egyptology. At sites where guides were not allowed inside, he patiently explained the carvings in our photos and clearly knew exactly where each one came from. Beyond the tours, he shared a lot about local culture, daily life, and food recommendations, which added a lot to the experience. Having the same guide throughout Luxor and Aswan made the experience feel seamless and relaxed. Overall, Egy Vacations provided great value, excellent guides, and very personal service. As a woman, I felt safe and well taken care of throughout the entire trip. I would absolutely recommend Egy Vacations to other travelers if they are looking to go to Egypt on a private tour.Posted on Tripadvisor THOMAS OVerified We met a lot of really good characters on our tour and found the Egyption people welcoming and frendly. We will recommen We went on a private guided tour of all major locations. Our guides in Cairo and Aswan/ luxor were excellent. Ahmed and Mohamed (mo mo) Real experts with a passion for their countries history. The hotels were first class and the Nile cruise on the Steigenberger Regency was a great experiance. Egy Vacations allowed us to be flexable with our itinery. We spent extra time at the GEM.Posted on Tripadvisor elena hVerified Great guide!! November is a very good time to travel to Egypt since the weather is very enjoyable. Of course, Egypt is a country to enjoy many remarkable historical sites but it would’ve not been the same without our knowledgable guide Ahmed Zidan. He made our trip in Cairo an even better experience through his interesting stories, amazing insights for each of the visits and his flexibility. We really recommend Ahmed Zidan as your guide.Posted on Tripadvisor Ruth BVerified Fantastic day in Egypt What a great team ! Ti and Bishoi were super educated and their photography skills were amazing. They made trip really fun and anxiety free for us as they were always informing us for what to watch out and be careful about. I feel very blessed that i spend my time with so kind and smart people.

Absolutely. Egypt continues to be a safe and welcoming destination, especially in popular areas like Cairo, Luxor, Aswan, and Sharm El-Sheikh. These tourist hubs are well-secured and regularly patrolled by tourism police. While Egypt is a large and diverse country, some regions like Northern Sinai and remote parts of the western desert remain restricted due to safety concerns. At EgyVacations, we closely monitor all developments and tailor your itinerary to avoid any areas under advisory. As long as you follow standard travel precautions, you can enjoy Egypt’s rich history, culture, and warm hospitality with peace of mind.
A Dahabiya is a small, traditional twin-masted sailboat carrying 8–20 guests, powered mainly by wind rather than an engine. A standard Nile cruise ship carries 100–200+ passengers with resort-style amenities like pools and entertainment on a fixed schedule. Dahabiyas cost more per day but offer a quieter, more private, and more flexible itinerary — see our full Dahabiya vs. Nile Cruise comparison for details.
Prices typically range from about $900 to $1,600+ per person depending on cruise length, cabin category, season, and number of guests onboard. Peak season (October–April) and shorter charters with fewer passengers tend to cost more per day. Contact us for a tailored quote based on your dates and preferred boat.
Most itineraries run 4 to 6 days between Luxor and Aswan, though charters range from 3 nights up to 8+ days. Four to five days is the sweet spot for covering Karnak, Edfu, Kom Ombo, and Philae without feeling rushed.
Both. The private, boutique atmosphere suits couples looking for a romantic honeymoon experience, while private charters work well for families or small groups who want the whole boat and a flexible schedule.
Most packages include full-board meals, a private or shared cabin, guided excursions with a licensed Egyptologist, entrance fees to major sites, and transfers. Drinks, tips, and optional add-ons like Abu Simbel are usually extra — always confirm inclusions before booking.
Visa Requirements
Most nationalities need a tourist visa for Egypt, easy to get either as an e-Visa in advance or on arrival at the airport. It costs $25 USD and is valid for 30 days — enough time for any Dahabiya itinerary plus a few days in Cairo. Applying online beforehand saves time at the airport, especially if you’re flying straight into Luxor or Aswan.
Currency & Payments
The Egyptian Pound (EGP) is the local currency, though USD is widely accepted in tourist areas. Onboard your Dahabiya, most costs are prepaid, but keep small cash — EGP or USD — on hand for drinks, souvenirs at riverside markets, and tips. Credit cards work in major hotels but rarely in small villages, so don’t rely on them once you’re sailing.
Tipping Culture
Tipping (“baksheesh”) is expected and appreciated throughout Egypt, including on Dahabiya cruises. Budget roughly $8–12 USD per day per person for the crew (captain, chef, cabin staff combined) and $10–15 USD per day for your private Egyptologist guide. Small bills are easiest — bring a mix of $1s, $5s, and small EGP notes for the trip.
The best time for a Dahabiya Nile Cruise is mid-October through April, when temperatures are mild and ideal for sailing, sundeck lounging, and temple visits. October–November and February–April are the sweet spot — great weather with fewer crowds than peak winter. Summer (May–September) is very hot in Luxor and Aswan, but stronger winds make for faster sailing and noticeably lower prices.
Pack light, breathable, and modest clothing — long sleeves and looser fits handle sun and temple visits well. Bring:
A few small items make a real difference on a Dahabiya, where shops are limited once you’re sailing. Bring:
Absolutely — and a Dahabiya is the best version of that experience. Instead of a fixed, engine-driven route, you sail at a relaxed, wind-powered pace between Luxor and Aswan, stopping at temples and villages larger cruise ships can’t reach. It’s the difference between checking sites off a list and actually feeling the rhythm of the Nile.
Pair your Dahabiya cruise with an early-morning visit to the Great Pyramids of Giza before or after sailing — arriving early beats both the heat and the crowds. Touring with a certified Egyptologist adds real depth, and combining it with a stop at Saqqara or Dahshur rounds out the story of how pyramid-building evolved over time.
Beyond the temples along your cruise route, consider:
For a full Dahabiya experience, plan on 4 to 6 days for the cruise itself. If you want to combine it with Cairo and the Pyramids, budget 7 to 10 days total. Travelers adding the Red Sea, Abu Simbel, or extra time in Cairo often extend to 10–14 days for a more complete Egypt trip.
