QUICK ANSWER
October is considered one of Egypt’s two or three best months to visit, and it may be considered the very best month for newcomers. The summer temperatures start to abate: Cairo – 22-32°C, Luxor and Aswan – 25-37°C (early in the month) and 20-32°C (late), Red Sea – 26-32°C, water 27-28°C. The crowds are swelling but haven’t reached their peak yet. Prices start increasing from mid-October as the peak season starts approaching. The Abu Simbel Sun Festival which takes place on October 21-22 is among the most spectacular annual festivals in Egypt.
Licensed Egypt tour guide Yasser Shoaib and Egypt specialist at Egy Vacations recommends October more than any other month. ‘October is when everything falls into place,’ he explains. ‘The weather is not that hot throughout the day — not only during dawn. There are crowds around but not too much. And the lighting of the Nile during October is like nothing you have ever seen before.’ This guide includes every detail about visiting Egypt in October: from the weather forecast per week and area to the Abu Simbel Festival and pricing.

Why October Is Egypt’s Sweet Spot Month
There is a very limited period when traveling to Egypt is the most appropriate; it is from October till February, and out of this limited period, October plays a unique role. October marks the beginning of that time, when there is a shift from the summer heat to the coolness of autumn, when it is not hard to stand in lines at the tourist destinations, and when everything works perfectly in Egypt.
October vs September: A Clear Step Up
The primary drawback of September travel – the danger of crippling heat at midday in Luxor and Aswan – is largely overcome in October. The high temperature in Upper Egypt is below 37°C by early October, 33°C by mid-October, and around 28 to 30°C by late October. This means visiting temples on a full-day basis will now be truly pleasant, instead of needing an army-like morning timetable for that.
October vs November: Lower Prices, Less Competition
November is certainly marginally better weather-wise; there is a couple of degrees of difference in that direction, especially during the early part of the month. However, November is also definitely more costly and more crowded. The prices for November as the peak season are around 20-30% higher than in October at the same hotel or cruise line. November also gives less time to find available Nile cruises than October does.
★ THE OCTOBER ADVANTAGE IN ONE SENTENCE
October gives you 90% of November’s comfort at 80% of November’s price, with meaningfully less competition for the hotels, cruise ships, and dawn temple visits that make an Egypt trip extraordinary.
Egypt Weather in October 2026: Region by Region
| Region | Early October (1–15) | Late October (16–31) | Sea Temperature | Rain | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cairo & Giza | 27–32°C (81–90°F) | 22–28°C (72–82°F) | N/A | Trace | Excellent — full-day sightseeing becomes comfortable from mid-October. |
| Luxor | 32–37°C (90–99°F) | 26–32°C (79–90°F) | N/A | None | Good — early-morning sightseeing is still preferable during the first two weeks; late October is much more comfortable. |
| Aswan | 33–37°C (91–99°F) | 27–32°C (81–90°F) | N/A | None | Warmest city; morning visits are preferred in early October, while late October offers excellent conditions. |
| Hurghada / Red Sea | 28–32°C (82–90°F) | 25–30°C (77–86°F) | 27–28°C | None | Excellent — warm sea, good diving conditions, and comfortable beach weather throughout October. |
| Sharm El Sheikh | 26–30°C (79–86°F) | 22–27°C (72–81°F) | 26–27°C | None | Excellent for diving and snorkeling, with pleasant evenings and warm water. |

💡 THE OCTOBER SHIFT: WHEN DOES IT HAPPEN?
The difference between ‘hot’ and ‘really comfortable’ in Upper Egypt occurs between 10-15 October. During that time, Luxor and Aswan still have temperatures between 35-37°C in the early afternoon and will take advantage of the early morning strategy. After mid-October, one can enjoy visiting the temples at any time – from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM – without the need for an early morning strategy practiced in September.
The Abu Simbel Sun Festival: 21–22 October
If your October Egypt trip can be positioned around any fixed date, make it 21–22 October.
What Happens
There are two times in the year when an astronomical phenomenon results in the rising sun shining its way completely into the temple of Ramesses II in Abu Simbel and illuminating the four statues inside it. There are three illuminated statues of Ramesses II, Ra-Horakhty, and Amun. However, the fourth statue, which represents the deity Ptah – the god of darkness and the underworld – is deliberately left in the shade.
The whole process takes about 20-25 minutes, but actually, the preparation starts hours before that when the first group of people congregates at the waterside where the temple stands. It all starts with the Nubian music that comes from afar, followed by foreign and Egyptian visitors to see this phenomenon, which has been taking place in the same place for more than 3300 years now, since 1279 BCE.
Regarding the dates: The engineers who designed the temple of Ramesses II calculated the original date of alignment of the temple on a lower cliff. The UNESCO relocation of 1968 involved the movement of the whole temple 65 meters up the slope and 200 meters back, resulting in the shift of the alignment date by one day to the new dates of 21 February and 21 October of the original dates.
How to Attend
- By early morning flight from Aswan: Egypt Air flies from Aswan in the early morning around 6:00 AM for the duration of the festival. These flights get fully booked months ahead
- By overnight stay at Abu Simbel: This small village offers very few lodging options which include the Seti Abu Simbel Lake Resort along with a few other lodgings. All these will be fully occupied on 20-22 October. These should be booked at least 3-4 months prior.
- By road from Aswan: It is a 3.5-4 hour long drive through the desert and usually leaves between 2:00 AM and 3:00 AM in order to reach before sunrise. It is usually arranged in tour packages only.
★ YASSER’S ABU SIMBEL RECOMMENDATION
For those of you visiting Egypt for the first time and if your October dates permit it, create your whole schedule in such a way that everything revolves around Abu Simbel on 21 or 22 October. From Cairo, you can travel to Aswan by air and spend two days in Aswan and Philae Temple. Thereafter, travel to Abu Simbel on 21 or 22 October for the Sun Festival and return back to Aswan on the same day. Next, start your Nile cruise journey from there to Luxor.
October Crowds & Prices: The Transition Month
October is Egypt’s pricing and crowd inflection point. Understanding the within-month shift helps you choose travel dates and set budget expectations:
| Period | Crowds | Prices vs Peak | Availability | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1–10 October | Low-Medium | 25–30% below peak | Good | September quiet continues; heat still high in Upper Egypt |
| 11–20 October | Medium | 15–20% below peak | Good — booking up | Sweet spot: cooling weather, reasonable prices |
| 21–22 October | High at Abu Simbel; Medium elsewhere | Peak for Abu Simbel accommodation | Abu Simbel fully booked months ahead | Sun Festival dates — plan very far in advance |
| 23–31 October | Medium–High | 10–15% below peak | Nile cruises filling fast | Pre-November rush; late October best all-round October week |
| Category | October | November | December–February | October saving vs peak |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 4-star Luxor hotel (per night) | $90–130 | $130–200+ | $150–220+ | 25–35% cheaper |
| Deluxe Nile cruise (per person, 4 nights) | $600–800 | $800–1,100+ | $850–1,200+ | 20–30% cheaper |
| Domestic flight Cairo–Luxor | $70–100 | $90–130 | $100–140 | 15–25% cheaper |
⚠️ OCTOBER BOOKING: ACT EARLIER THAN YOU THINK
October is a shoulder season – it isn’t. People usually plan their Egypt trip in October thinking that November is ‘the busy month’ and October will be easier to arrange. The truth is that popular Nile cruise vessels, luxurious hotels in Aswan, and even the accommodation in Abu Simbel on Sun Festival days get booked up as quickly as November. Minimum 6–10 weeks before your Nile cruise, and 3-4 months before the accommodation in Abu Simbel for 21-22 October.
Top Things to Do in Egypt in October
1. Nile Cruise — October Is the Peak of the Season
October is thought to be the ideal month to take a cruise on the Nile, thanks to the perfect weather conditions (daytime temperatures ranging from 25–32 °C, 18–22 °C at night time), open temples, and not yet too crowded. The time spent on deck is pleasant all day long. The shore visits happen in a very comfortable way and are not restricted to early morning (only) at 6:00 a.m., as in September. October nights on the Nile have a special flavor — they are warm enough to spend them outside.
2. Abu Simbel — The Temple Beyond the Standard Circuit
Apart from the dates of the Sun Festival, visiting Abu Simbel in October is unique no matter which part of the month you choose. By October, the heat that made visiting during mid-day unpleasant in the summer season has finally gone — especially the second part of the month, when the morning temperature in Abu Simbel ranges about 22–25°C. By then, the temple complex will be pretty much your own place since no day-trip flights leave Aswan until 8:30-9:00 AM.
Visiting Abu Simbel means taking a Abu Simbel day trip from Aswan in the early morning (by plane, 45 minutes, around $100-$150 round trip) or staying overnight in the village. Either option works well for October. If you stay overnight, the unique experience of visiting the temple at sunset, when the sunlight reflects from the huge façade, is included.
3. Pyramids of Giza & Grand Egyptian Museum
For the Giza Plateau, the climate in Cairo during the month of October (22-32°C) is near perfect as it is not too hot to spend up to 3 to 4 hours walking on the plateau. The schedule of visiting the Pyramids at 7:00 AM to 10:00 AM followed by a visit to the Grand Egyptian Museum (fully air-conditioned) starting from 10:00 AM is perhaps the best one-day Cairo itinerary that anyone could wish for.

4. Valley of the Kings & Luxor West Bank
As temperatures begin to improve, the West Bank changes. In September, one needed to get into the Valley of the Kings at 6:00 AM and depart at 9:30 AM. However, in mid-to-late October, one can enter at 7:30-8:00 AM and remain until 11:00 AM or later. The tombs are always at 22°C regardless of season. It is only on the approach and the Hatshepsut Temple terraces where the improvement of temperature becomes an advantage.
5. Red Sea Diving & Snorkelling
October is still a good time for diving and snorkeling in the Red Sea. The temperature of the water is 27-28 degrees centigrade and visibility is 20-25 meters. October is slightly less hot than the best diving month of September but still very good. The resort towns of the Red Sea start to fill up again with European tourists from October onwards as people start returning from their summer vacations.
6. White Desert & Desert Camping
The months of October, especially the latter half, constitute the beginning of the best time to camp in the desert. Accessible year round is the White Desert where the chalk formations are found – the whitened limestone formed through wind erosion into mushroom and chicken forms and abstract figures – but it is the pleasant temperature during October, warm day temperatures (22-26°C) and cool night temperatures (12-16°C), that make the overnight camping under the stars what it ought to be.
7. Khan el-Khalili & Islamic Cairo
The Cairo medieval market during October is in its element in terms of atmosphere and social experience in Khan el-Khalili. The evenings which average temperatures between 20-24°C in the alleyways create an enjoyable environment for walking around as the weather is neither extreme enough to force people to stay indoors nor cold enough to inhibit the cafe culture. El-Fishawy Café during the October evenings offers that welcoming atmosphere captured in the photographs.
Nile Cruise in October: Is This the Best Month?
There are very valid reasons why October should be chosen for cruising on the Nile River, starting with the perfect weather conditions that suit all elements of the cruise perfectly without making Aswan cold at night as happens in December. There is a unique quality of the lighting on the Nile in October due to the low angle of the sun and warm, amber colors during the afternoon hours.
The Case For
- Day-time temple visits comfortably: unlike September when you have to return on board at 9:30 AM, in October you have enough time for normal visits of Karnak, Edfu, Kom Ombo and Philae temples
- Evening temperatures are pleasantly warm: evening temperatures between 20–24°C allow open-air dinners and stargazing till late night which is the key part of Nile cruise and is partially lost in September
- Golden hour in October: due to different sun position in relation to summer, the golden hour is longer – sunrises and sunsets on the Nile in October are just outstanding
- Complete ship programme: in October all cruise ships operate full ship programmes not like in September when some ships have limited programmes
- Connection with Abu Simbel: October Nile cruises can be combined with Abu Simbel visit and even Sun Festival on 21-22 October fits perfectly into cruise extension model
The Trade-offs
- Prices higher than in September: 15%-25% more expensive
- Increased number of competing ships: popular ships fill up quicker in October compared to September; limited ability to book late
- Increased crowds at temples: October mornings at Valley of the Kings are busier than September mornings but significantly less crowded than December or January
💡 OCTOBER CRUISE BOOKING STRATEGY
October cruise ships should be booked at least 6 to 8 weeks in advance. October 19 to 25 (Sun Festival period) should be booked in advance 10 to 12 weeks. Dahabiya bookings in October should be made in advance 8 to 12 weeks. Please contact Egy Vacations for more details about availability in October.

What is the Abu Simbel Sun Festival in October?
Every year on the 21-22 October, the rising sun is in line with the axis of the Great Temple of Ramesses II in Abu Simbel, lighting up three of the four statues inside the innermost sanctuary for about 20-25 minutes. The festival dates have been shifted slightly due to the relocation of the temple to UNESCO in 1968. The atmosphere before dawn is as remarkable as the astronomical phenomenon itself. The temple of Abu Simbel is accessible within a 45-minute flight from Aswan; for the 21-22 October festival, hotel arrangements have to be made about 3-4 months in advance.
Is October more expensive than September in Egypt?

The Nile light of October – the lowered angle of the sun, the longer golden hours – is just amazing for photography. All cruise ships are fully operational in October with full temple access. The downside: October is a busy month and cruise ships book faster than September.
