A first-time visitor from the US needs at least 8 days to feel unhurried — 3 in Cairo, then a Nile cruise from Luxor to Aswan. Anything less and you are rushing. Anything more and you start uncovering Egypt’s quieter layers: Fayoum’s desert lakes, the Dahabiya sailboats, Abu Simbel at dawn.

View tripsThe overnight flight takes a day out of each end of the trip, so count your days on the ground. Seven days covers Cairo and a three-night cruise. Eight to ten days adds the Grand Egyptian Museum at an unhurried pace and a four-night cruise. Twelve to fifteen days opens Abu Simbel, Alexandria or the Red Sea.
If you are combining Egypt with Jordan or Dubai, add four to five days for the second country.
October to April is the comfortable half of the year in Luxor and Aswan. November to February is peak; US holiday weeks sell first. March, April and October keep the weather with fewer crowds. Summer is hot in the south, so excursions start at dawn.

The comfortable half of the year runs October to April: 20–28 °C in Luxor and Aswan, which is what open-deck sailing and three hours inside a temple actually require.

Book three to four months out for November to February. For a dahabiya, make it four — they carry twelve people and the good cabins go first.
Most nationalities — US, UK, EU and Australian included — get a 30-day tourist visa on arrival, or online as an e-Visa before they fly. Canadian citizens need a visa from an Egyptian embassy or consulate before travelling.

Carry the $36 in cash. The visa window at Cairo takes dollars and gives change in Egyptian pounds, and the card machine is not always working.
Hotels, cruisers and restaurants take Visa and Mastercard. Markets, tips and small cafés are cash. We quote in US dollars and can invoice in EUR, GBP or AUD.

Change a little at the airport and the rest at your hotel. Street exchange offices quote well and pay badly.
Light cotton for the days, one layer for the evenings, and shoes you can walk a temple in. Everything else you can buy here for less than you paid at home.

Leave room in the case. Cotton, spices and a hand-made galabeya cost a fraction of the airport price in Khan El Khalili, and your guide will tell you the real one.
Cairo to Luxor is an hour by air and ten by road, so almost every itinerary flies it. Between Luxor and Aswan the river is the road, and your room moves with you.

Sail Luxor to Aswan rather than the reverse if you can choose. You go upstream against the current, which means slower, longer afternoons on deck.

We can advise on the routes from your city and help you book the flights if you wish. Domestic flights inside Egypt, such as Cairo to Luxor, are included wherever the itinerary says so.
Expect a long-haul journey of roughly 10 to 13 hours in the air, and longer from cities that connect through a European or Gulf hub. Egypt is about 6 to 10 hours ahead of US time zones, depending on where you live and the season. That long journey is why we recommend at least 8 days for a first visit.

Yes. US passport holders need an Egypt tourist visa, which costs $36 for a single entry and is valid for 30 days. You can get it in advance through the official Egyptian e-Visa portal, which saves time at immigration, or on arrival at Cairo International Airport. Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your entry date, and we send the current steps with your booking.
They are private. You will never be placed on a coach with strangers: your Egyptologist guide, driver and vehicle are dedicated to your party alone, whether you travel solo, as a couple, as a family or with friends. That means you set the pace, linger where you want and skip what does not interest you, which is the main difference from a group tour.
October to April is the ideal window, with comfortable temperatures for the Pyramids and the temples of Luxor. Thanksgiving, the winter break and spring break all fall in this season and fill quickly, Christmas and New Year first, so book 2 to 3 months ahead or earlier for those dates. Summer vacation brings strong heat, especially in Luxor and Aswan, but fewer visitors and lower prices.
Prices are in US dollars, so there is no currency conversion for American travellers. Nothing is charged to enquire: a deposit as low as 30% confirms the trip once the itinerary is right (50% over Christmas, New Year and Easter), and the balance is due two days before you arrive or in cash on arrival. You can pay by bank transfer, a secure payment link, PayPal or cash on arrival.
Yes, in the areas our packages visit. Cairo, Luxor, Aswan, Hurghada and Sharm El-Sheikh are well-protected tourist zones with dedicated tourism police, and on a private tour your guide and driver are with you at every site. We follow US State Department advisories and plan around any restricted area; if a government or airline issues a do-not-travel warning, your tour is refunded or held as a credit.
